Here’s a classic, cozy chicken and dumplings recipe—simple, comforting, and hearty 🍲


Chicken and Dumplings

Ingredients

Soup

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 celery stalks, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded (rotisserie works great)
  • 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • ½ cup milk or cream (optional, for creamier soup)

Dumplings

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • ¾ cup milk

Instructions

  1. Make the soup base
    In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat.
    Add onion, carrots, and celery. Cook 5–7 minutes until soft.
    Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  2. Simmer
    Add chicken broth, salt, pepper, thyme, and chicken.
    Bring to a gentle boil, then lower to a simmer.
  3. Make dumpling dough
    In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
    Stir in melted butter and milk until just combined (don’t overmix).
  4. Add dumplings
    Drop dough by spoonfuls onto the simmering soup.
    Cover with a lid and do not lift it for 15 minutes.
  5. Finish
    Uncover, stir gently, and add milk or cream if using.
    Taste and adjust seasoning.

Tips

  • For fluffy dumplings, keep the pot covered while they cook.
  • For denser, Southern-style dumplings, roll dough thin and cut into strips.
  • Add peas or corn at the end if you like veggies.
