Here’s how to nail a boiled egg every time.

Perfect Boiled Eggs

Ingredients

  • Eggs
  • Water
  • Pinch of salt (optional)

Method (no-fail)

  1. Start cold
    • Place eggs in a pot in a single layer.
    • Cover with cold water (about 1 inch over eggs).
  2. Boil
    • Bring to a rolling boil.
    • Once boiling, cover and turn off heat.
  3. Time it
    • Soft-boiled (jammy): 6–7 minutes
    • Medium: 8–9 minutes
    • Hard-boiled: 10–12 minutes
  4. Ice bath
    • Transfer eggs to ice water for 5 minutes.
    • Stops cooking + easier peeling.
  5. Peel or store
    • Tap, roll, peel from the wide end.

Pro Tips

  • Slightly older eggs peel better.
  • Peeling under running water helps.
  • Add vinegar if an egg cracks—less leaking.
