Old fashioned sour cream donut

Posted on January 1, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic old-fashioned sour cream donut recipe 🍩 — lightly crisp on the outside, tender and cake-like inside.

Ingredients (makes ~10–12 donuts)

Dry

  • 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp nutmeg (traditional flavor)

Wet

  • 2 tbsp butter, melted and cooled
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • ¾ cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For frying

  • Vegetable or canola oil

Optional glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla

Instructions

1. Make the dough

  1. In a bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  2. In another bowl, mix melted butter, egg yolks, sour cream, and vanilla.
  3. Gently stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  4. Cover and chill 30–45 minutes (this helps shape the donuts).

2. Shape the donuts

  1. Roll dough on a lightly floured surface to about ½ inch thick.
  2. Cut with a donut cutter or two round cutters.
  3. Place on a tray and keep chilled until frying.

3. Fry

  1. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Fry donuts 1–1½ minutes per side until deep golden and cracked on top.
  3. Drain on paper towels.

4. Glaze (optional)

  1. Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  2. Dip warm donuts into glaze and let set.

Tips for authentic old-fashioned donuts

  • Don’t overmix — that keeps them tender
  • Nutmeg is key to the classic flavor
  • Fry in small batches to keep oil temperature steady

If you want, I can also give you:

  • A baked version
  • A chocolate or maple glaze
  • A mini donut version

Just tell me! 😊
