Bangers and mash

Posted on February 11, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic Bangers and Mash recipe — hearty British comfort food with savory sausages, creamy mashed potatoes, and rich onion gravy 🌭🥔

🌭 Bangers and Mash

Ingredients

For the Mash:

  • 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet), peeled and chopped
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk (warm)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Sausages:

  • 6–8 pork sausages (traditional British “bangers” or any savory sausage)
  • 1 tbsp oil (if needed for frying)

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 1–2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 cup beef or chicken stock
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Mash

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (15–20 minutes).
  2. Drain and mash with butter and warm milk until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Keep warm.

2️⃣ Cook the Sausages

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add oil if needed.
  2. Cook sausages, turning occasionally, until browned and cooked through (12–15 minutes).
  3. Remove from pan and keep warm.

3️⃣ Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter or use pan drippings.
  2. Add sliced onions and cook slowly until soft and caramelized (8–10 minutes).
  3. Sprinkle flour over onions and cook 1–2 minutes.
  4. Gradually whisk in stock and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened. Season to taste.

4️⃣ Serve

  1. Place a mound of mashed potatoes on each plate.
  2. Top with sausages.
  3. Pour onion gravy over the top.

🔥 Tips

  • For extra flavor, mash in roasted garlic.
  • Try a mix of sausages: pork, Cumberland, or herby varieties.
  • Onion gravy can be made ahead and reheated.
  • Add a side of peas or sautéed greens for a complete meal.

If you want, I can also give you:

  • Sheet pan version for easy cleanup
  • Slow cooker version
  • Vegetarian bangers and mash
  • Or a pub-style extra rich gravy version

Do you want the traditional pork sausage version or a vegetarian option?
