Buttermilk biscuits

Here’s a classic, fluffy Buttermilk Biscuit recipe — soft, buttery, and perfect for breakfast or alongside dinner.


🥐 Buttermilk Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 6 tbsp cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • ¾ cup cold buttermilk (plus a little extra for brushing)

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat oven

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2️⃣ Mix dry ingredients

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

3️⃣ Cut in butter

  • Add cold cubed butter to flour mixture.
  • Use a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers to cut butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

4️⃣ Add buttermilk

  • Pour in cold buttermilk and stir until dough just comes together.
  • Do not overmix — the dough should be slightly sticky.

5️⃣ Shape biscuits

  • Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface.
  • Gently pat or roll to about ¾-inch thickness.
  • Cut with a biscuit cutter or glass into rounds.
  • Place biscuits close together on the baking sheet for soft sides, or spaced apart for crispier edges.

6️⃣ Bake

  • Brush tops with a little buttermilk if desired.
  • Bake 12–15 minutes until golden brown.

7️⃣ Serve

  • Serve warm with butter, honey, or gravy.

🔥 Tips & Variations

  • For extra flaky layers, fold the dough over itself once or twice before cutting.
  • Substitute half the flour with whole wheat for a nuttier flavor.
  • Add shredded cheese, herbs, or garlic for savory biscuits.
  • Store cooled biscuits in an airtight container and reheat in the oven for freshness.
