🌽 Fried cornbread

Fried cornbread is a crispy, golden version of traditional cornbread that is pan-fried instead of baked. It’s a popular Southern dish often served as a side with soups, stews, or greens.

🧾 Ingredients

  • 1 cup Cornmeal
  • ½ cup All-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar (optional)
  • 1 tsp Baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 Egg
  • 2–3 tbsp Butter or oil for frying
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Make the batter
    • In a bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
    • In another bowl, whisk milk and egg. Mix wet and dry ingredients until smooth.
  2. Heat the pan
    • Heat a skillet over medium heat and add butter or oil.
  3. Fry the cornbread
    • Pour batter into the skillet in small portions (like pancakes) or as one larger piece.
    • Cook 3–5 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.
  4. Serve
    • Serve hot with Honey, butter, or as a side to soups, beans, or chili.

🌟 Tips

  • For extra crispiness, fry in a little extra oil rather than just butter.
  • Add corn kernels or cheese to the batter for variety.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan; cook in batches for even browning.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • With Ham and bean soup
  • Alongside Greens or stews
  • Topped with a drizzle of Maple syrup for a breakfast twist

✅ Fun fact: Fried cornbread was originally a way to quickly cook cornmeal in a skillet over an open fire, making it a staple in Southern kitchens.
