Hobo dinners (also called foil packet meals) are super easy, no-mess meals where everything cooks together in a sealed foil packet—perfect for oven, grill, or campfire.


🥩 Hobo Dinners (Foil Packet Meals)

🧾 Ingredients (per packet)

  • 150–200g ground beef (or chicken pieces)
  • 1–2 potatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 1 carrot (sliced)
  • ¼ onion (sliced)
  • 1–2 tbsp butter
  • Salt & black pepper

🌶️ Optional add-ins

  • Bell peppers
  • Mushrooms
  • Garlic
  • Cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • BBQ sauce or ketchup

👨‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prep Foil

  • Cut large squares of aluminum foil (enough to fold and seal).

2. Layer Ingredients

  • Place potatoes and carrots on the bottom (they take longer to cook).
  • Add meat on top (form ground beef into a patty if using).
  • Add onions and other veggies.
  • Season well and top with butter.

3. Seal Packets

  • Fold foil tightly to seal (keep some space inside for steam).

4. Cook

🔥 Oven:

  • 190°C (375°F) for 35–45 minutes

🔥 Grill:

  • Medium heat for 25–30 minutes

🔥 Campfire:

  • Place on hot coals for 25–40 minutes, turning occasionally

🧀 Finish

  • Carefully open packets (hot steam!).
  • Add cheese on top and let it melt.

🍽️ Serving

  • Eat straight from the foil or transfer to a plate.
  • Great with bread or a simple salad.

  • Slice veggies thin so they cook evenly.
  • Double-wrap packets if cooking on a campfire.
  • Add a splash of broth or sauce for extra moisture.
