Posted on January 15, 2026 by Admin

Here’s the classic “Pile Sliced Onions and These 4 Ingredients Over Beef” baked supper—an old-school, dump-and-bake comfort meal that turns fork-tender and flavorful in the oven 🥩🧅

🥩 Baked Onion Beef Supper (Serves 4)

Ingredients

  • 2–3 lb beef roast (chuck roast or bottom round works best)
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 envelope onion soup mix
  • 4–5 medium potatoes, sliced or quartered
  • 4 tbsp butter, sliced into pats

(Salt and pepper optional—soup mix usually covers it)

Instructions

1️⃣ Prep oven & pan

  • Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C).
  • Lightly grease a baking dish or roasting pan.

2️⃣ Assemble

  1. Place beef roast in the center of the pan.
  2. Arrange potatoes around the beef.
  3. Pile sliced onions on top of the beef.
  4. Sprinkle onion soup mix evenly over everything.
  5. Dot butter over onions and potatoes.

3️⃣ Bake

  • Cover tightly with foil.
  • Bake 3–3½ hours, until beef is fork-tender and potatoes are soft.

4️⃣ Serve

  • Spoon onions and juices over the beef and potatoes.
  • Slice or shred beef before serving.

🔄 Easy Variations

  • Add carrots: Toss in baby carrots or sliced carrots.
  • Juicier gravy: Add ½ cup beef broth before baking.
  • Slow cooker: Cook on LOW 8 hours or HIGH 4–5 hours.
  • Extra flavor: Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce.

💡 Tips

  • Chuck roast gives the best tender result.
  • Keep it tightly covered—steam = tenderness.
  • Leftovers make excellent sandwiches or hash.

If you want, I can give you:

  • A foil-packet version
  • A 5-ingredient creamy version
  • Or a sheet-pan shortcut
