Salisbury Steak 🍽️—a classic comfort food: juicy beef patties smothered in rich mushroom-onion gravy. Here’s a simple, home-style recipe.
Salisbury Steak
Ingredients (Serves 4)
For the patties:
- 1 lb ground beef
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- ÂĽ cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp salt
- ÂĽ tsp black pepper
For the gravy:
- 2 tbsp butter or oil
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt & pepper, to taste
Instructions
1. Make the patties
- In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, Worcestershire, salt, and pepper.
- Shape into 4 oval patties.
2. Cook the patties
- Heat a skillet over medium-high.
- Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).
- Remove patties and set aside.
3. Make the gravy
- In the same skillet, melt butter (or add oil) and sauté mushrooms and onions until soft.
- Sprinkle flour over veggies, stir for 1–2 minutes.
- Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire.
- Simmer until thickened (5–7 minutes).
- Season with salt & pepper.
4. Combine & simmer
- Return patties to skillet, spoon gravy over them.
- Simmer 10–15 minutes until patties are fully cooked (internal temp 160°F/71°C).
Serve
- Over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
- Sprinkle fresh parsley for garnish.
Tips
- Don’t overmix the meat—keeps patties tender.
- Optional: add a splash of red wine to the gravy for extra depth.
- Shortcut: use pre-sliced mushrooms and store-bought beef broth.
