Salisbury steak

Posted on January 27, 2026 by Admin

Salisbury Steak 🍽️—a classic comfort food: juicy beef patties smothered in rich mushroom-onion gravy. Here’s a simple, home-style recipe.

Salisbury Steak

Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the patties:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ÂĽ cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ÂĽ tsp black pepper

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Make the patties

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, Worcestershire, salt, and pepper.
  2. Shape into 4 oval patties.

2. Cook the patties

  • Heat a skillet over medium-high.
  • Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).
  • Remove patties and set aside.

3. Make the gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter (or add oil) and sauté mushrooms and onions until soft.
  2. Sprinkle flour over veggies, stir for 1–2 minutes.
  3. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire.
  4. Simmer until thickened (5–7 minutes).
  5. Season with salt & pepper.

4. Combine & simmer

  • Return patties to skillet, spoon gravy over them.
  • Simmer 10–15 minutes until patties are fully cooked (internal temp 160°F/71°C).

Serve

  • Over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
  • Sprinkle fresh parsley for garnish.

Tips

  • Don’t overmix the meat—keeps patties tender.
  • Optional: add a splash of red wine to the gravy for extra depth.
  • Shortcut: use pre-sliced mushrooms and store-bought beef broth.

I can also give a slow-cooker Salisbury steak recipe that’s “set it and forget it” or an extra-rich mushroom gravy version.
