Salisbury steak

Here’s a classic, hearty Salisbury Steak recipe — tender beef patties smothered in rich brown gravy.


🥩 Salisbury Steak

Ingredients

For the steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • Optional: sautéed mushrooms or caramelized onions

Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the patties

  • In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, egg, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  • Form into 4 oval patties.

2️⃣ Cook the patties

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat with a little oil.
  • Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side until just cooked through. Remove and set aside.

3️⃣ Make the gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt butter.
  • Whisk in flour and cook 1–2 minutes until lightly browned.
  • Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Simmer 3–5 minutes until thickened.
  • Season with salt and pepper.

4️⃣ Combine and simmer

  • Return patties to the skillet.
  • Simmer in gravy 5–10 minutes until fully cooked (internal temp 160°F / 71°C) and flavors meld.

5️⃣ Serve

  • Serve Salisbury steaks with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables, spooning extra gravy over the top.

🔥 Tips & Variations

  • Add sautéed mushrooms to the gravy for a classic mushroom Salisbury steak.
  • For extra tenderness, soak breadcrumbs in milk before mixing into beef.
  • Make ahead: patties can be browned ahead of time and refrigerated until ready to simmer in gravy.
  • Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
