Shepherd’s pie

Posted on January 27, 2026 by Admin

Absolutely! Here’s a classic Shepherd’s Pie recipe with a clear ingredient list and step-by-step instructions:

Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

(serves 4–6)

Ingredients

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup milk (or more for creaminess)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the filling:

  • 1 pound ground lamb (or beef if you prefer “Cottage Pie”)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (or 2 cloves fresh garlic, minced)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make mashed potatoes:
    • Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15–20 minutes.
    • Drain, mash with butter and milk, and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
  2. Cook filling:
    • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Add onion and carrots, cook 5 minutes until softened.
    • Add ground lamb (or beef) and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
    • Stir in garlic, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
    • Pour in broth and simmer 5–7 minutes until slightly thickened.
    • Stir in frozen peas at the end.
  3. Assemble Shepherd’s Pie:
    • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Spoon the meat and vegetable filling into a baking dish.
    • Spread mashed potatoes evenly over the top.
    • Optional: Use a fork to create peaks in the mashed potatoes for a golden finish.
  4. Bake:
    • Bake 20–25 minutes until the top is lightly golden and filling is bubbling.
  5. Serve:
    • Let sit 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Tips

  • Extra flavor: Mix a little shredded cheese into the mashed potatoes before baking.
  • Vegetable variations: Corn, green beans, or mushrooms can be added to the filling.
  • Make ahead: Assemble and refrigerate; bake 30–35 minutes at 375°F (190°C) when ready.

If you want, I can also give a lighter, healthier version of Shepherd’s Pie with cauliflower mash that’s just as comforting but lower in carbs.

Do you want me to share that version?
