🥧 Shepherd’s pie

Shepherd’s pie is a classic British dish made with ground lamb cooked with vegetables and gravy, topped with a layer of mashed potatoes and baked until golden. When made with beef, it’s often called Cottage pie.

🧾 Ingredients

  • 500 g Ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
  • 1–2 cups Mashed potatoes
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup peas
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste or 1 cup gravy
  • 1 cup Beef or chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Cook the filling
    • SautĂ© onion and carrots in butter until soft.
    • Add ground lamb and cook until browned.
    • Stir in tomato paste, broth, and peas. Simmer until thickened.
  2. Prepare the topping
    • Make mashed potatoes (or use leftovers).
  3. Assemble
    • Spread meat and vegetable mixture in a baking dish.
    • Top with mashed potatoes, smoothing with a spatula or fork.
  4. Bake
    • Bake at 200 °C (400 °F) for 20–25 minutes until the top is lightly golden.

🌟 Tips

  • Add garlic, rosemary, or thyme to the meat mixture for extra flavor.
  • Sprinkle cheese on top of the mashed potatoes for a golden crust.
  • Use Yukon Gold potatoes for creamier mashed potatoes.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • Serve with a side of Green beans, Roasted vegetables, or a fresh salad.

✅ Fun fact: Shepherd’s pie originated as a way to use leftover roasted meat and is named because traditionally it uses lamb, which shepherds tended.
