Slow cooker cabbage

Posted on March 13, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a simple and flavorful recipe for Slow Cooker Cabbage—a hands-off dish that’s tender, savory, and perfect as a side or main with sausage or bacon.

Slow Cooker Cabbage

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp butter or olive oil
  • 1 cup vegetable or chicken broth
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: 1 tsp smoked paprika or caraway seeds
  • Optional: ½ lb cooked bacon or sausage, sliced

Instructions

  1. Prepare the slow cooker:
    • Spray or lightly grease the slow cooker with cooking spray or butter.
  2. Layer ingredients:
    • Place chopped cabbage and sliced onion in the slow cooker.
    • Add minced garlic, butter or olive oil, and optional spices.
  3. Add liquid:
    • Pour broth over the cabbage. Season with salt and pepper.
    • Stir gently to distribute.
  4. Cook:
    • Cover and cook on low for 6–7 hours or high for 3–4 hours, until cabbage is tender.
    • If adding cooked bacon or sausage, stir in during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  5. Serve:
    • Taste and adjust seasoning before serving.
    • Optional: drizzle a little vinegar or lemon juice for brightness.

💡 Tips:

  • For sweeter cabbage, add a small splash of apple cider vinegar or a teaspoon of brown sugar.
  • Keeps well—store leftovers in the fridge for 3–4 days and reheat gently.
  • Pair with mashed potatoes, roasted meat, or as a hearty vegetarian main with beans.

I can also give a slow cooker cabbage and noodles version—similar to the classic stovetop recipe but fully hands-off and infused with rich flavor.

Do you want me to share that version?
