Wonton

Here’s a simple, classic wonton recipe you can make at home 🥟


Ingredients (about 25–30 wontons)

Wrappers

  • Wonton wrappers (store-bought)

Filling

  • 250 g (½ lb) ground chicken or pork
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp cornstarch (helps bind)
  • Optional: finely chopped shrimp or mushrooms

How to Make Wontons

1. Prepare the filling

Mix all filling ingredients in a bowl until well combined. Don’t overmix—just until sticky.


2. Fill & fold

  1. Place 1 teaspoon of filling in the center of a wonton wrapper.
  2. Dip your finger in water and wet the edges.
  3. Fold into a triangle and press to seal.
  4. Bring the two corners together and press to form the classic wonton shape.

(You can also just fold into triangles if that’s easier.)


Cooking Methods

🥣 Boiled (great for soup)

  • Boil in salted water for 3–5 minutes until they float.
  • Add directly to broth.

🥟 Fried (crispy)

  • Fry at 175°C / 350°F until golden (2–3 minutes).
  • Drain on paper towels.

🍳 Pan-fried (potsticker-style)

  • Pan-fry bottoms until golden, add a little water, cover, and steam 2–3 minutes.

Simple Wonton Soup (Optional)

  • Chicken broth
  • A splash of soy sauce
  • Sesame oil
  • Green onions
  • Add cooked wontons and simmer 2 minutes
