Here’s a comforting, classic Wonton Soup recipe—light broth, tender wontons, and full of flavor 🥟🍲

Wonton Soup

Ingredients (makes 4 servings)

For the Wontons:

  • 1/2 lb ground pork (or chicken/shrimp mix)
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger, minced
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp white or black pepper
  • 30–40 wonton wrappers

For the Soup Broth:

  • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2–3 slices fresh ginger
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, smashed (optional)
  • 2 tsp soy sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1–2 cups baby spinach, bok choy, or napa cabbage
  • Optional garnish: sliced green onions, cilantro, or a few drops of chili oil

Instructions

  1. Make the filling
In a bowl, combine ground meat, green onions, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper.
  2. Fill the wontons
    • Place ~1 tsp of filling in the center of a wonton wrapper.
    • Moisten edges with water, fold in half diagonally to form a triangle, then press edges to seal.
    • Optional: bring the two corners of the triangle together and press to form a traditional wonton shape.
  3. Prepare the broth
    • In a pot, bring chicken broth, ginger slices, garlic (if using), soy sauce, and sesame oil to a gentle boil.
    • Reduce to a simmer.
  4. Cook the wontons
    • Carefully drop wontons into simmering broth.
    • Cook 4–6 minutes until the filling is cooked through and wrappers are tender.
  5. Add vegetables
    • Add spinach, bok choy, or napa cabbage in the last 1–2 minutes of cooking.
  6. Serve
    • Ladle wontons and broth into bowls.
    • Garnish with green onions, cilantro, or chili oil if desired.

Tips & Variations

  • Make-ahead: Freeze raw wontons on a baking sheet, then transfer to a bag. Cook from frozen (add 1–2 extra minutes).
  • Broth flavor: Add a splash of Shaoxing wine or a few dried shiitake mushrooms.
  • Protein swap: Shrimp, chicken, or tofu can replace pork.
  • Spice option: Add sliced chili or a drizzle of Sriracha for heat.

I can also give a quick 30-minute version using pre-made wontons for a fast weeknight meal. Do you want that shortcut version?
